Takara Tomy Ghibli Diecast Models: The Complete Collector's Guide
There's a particular satisfaction to picking up a Takara Tomy diecast Ghibli model for the first time. The weight is unexpected - 80 to 120 grams for something that small - and it immediately communicates that this is not a toy. It's a metal object. It has heft. The Catbus rolls on all twelve legs. The Tiger Moth's propellers turn. Porco's S.21F seaplane sits on its pontoons with the kind of stability that only real material provides.
We've been stocking these at totoro-shop for years, and the pattern is consistent: customers who buy one tend to come back for the others. The full set displayed together is genuinely impressive.
The complete range
Our collection currently carries eight Takara Tomy diecast models:
- Porco Rosso S.21F Seaplane (8 x 10 x 4 cm, 100g) - The legendary red seaplane. One of the heavier aircraft models in the range, with real metal pontoons.
- Laputa Tiger Moth Airship (9 x 9 x 4 cm, 120g) - Dola's iconic airship from Castle in the Sky. The heaviest and most detailed model in the entire range. The propellers and rigging are rendered with extraordinary precision.
- Howl's Moving Castle (6 x 4 x 7 cm, 90g) - The mechanical castle in compact metal form, rolling on its legs.
- Spirited Away Spirit Train (9 x 3 x 4 cm, 80g) - The haunting train crossing the flooded sea. One of the most requested models we carry.
- Catbus / Nekobus (8 x 5 x 4 cm, 80g) - All twelve legs roll. Ghibli's most whimsical vehicle in metal form.
- Ponyo's Boat (7 x 4 x 5 cm, 60g) - Sosuke's little red fishing boat. The lightest model and, in its simplicity, one of the most charming.
- Mei's Father's Car (7 x 4 x 6 cm, 90g) - The distinctive rounded family car from My Neighbor Totoro.
- Calcifer (6 x 4 x 7 cm, 90g) - The fire demon from Howl's Moving Castle in diecast metal, the only non-vehicle subject in the range.

How to display the collection
The aviation models group naturally together: the S.21F seaplane, the Tiger Moth airship, and the spirit train create a cross-film aviation shelf with real visual coherence. The Totoro-universe models (Catbus, Mei's car) pair naturally with Totoro plush from our Totoro plush collection. The Howl models (castle and Calcifer) work as a standalone Howl's Moving Castle display alongside artbooks.
Mixing formats for depth
These diecast models pair particularly well with Miniatuart paper kits on the same shelf - the contrast between metal and paper, weight and lightness, creates a more interesting display than either format alone. A Catbus diecast next to a Catbus Miniatuart is not redundant; it's a comparison of two entirely different approaches to the same subject.
Who these are really for
Rated for ages 3 and up, but the genuine audience is adult collectors. The finish, weight and detail make these premium desk objects rather than toys. They are the most immediately impressive Ghibli merchandise we carry in terms of first-contact impact - the moment someone picks one up for the first time.
