Ponyo and the Sea: Miyazaki's Ode to Childhood Wonder
Released in 2008, Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea is one of Miyazaki's most purely joyful films. Deliberately simple in story and consciously retro in its hand-drawn aesthetic, it follows Ponyo, a magical goldfish who runs away from her oceanic home and falls in love with five-year-old Sosuke, leading to a watery adventure that puts the entire coastline at risk.
A Tribute to Hand-Drawn Animation
Miyazaki made Ponyo as a deliberate rejection of digital animation. The film uses hand-drawn lines, hand-painted backgrounds and a deliberately loose, expressionistic style that gives it a quality unlike any other Ghibli film. The ocean sequences, in which waves transform into galloping white horses and deep-sea fish multiply to surreal proportions, are among the most inventive pieces of animation in the studio's history.
The Story of Ponyo
Ponyo's relationship with Sosuke is a story of unconditional love and the courage to choose who you want to be. Miyazaki drew on Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid but stripped away its tragedy, replacing it with a vision of human warmth and community resilience. The coastal village where Sosuke lives, inspired by Japanese fishing communities, is one of Ghibli's most lovingly rendered environments.
The Characters of Ponyo
Ponyo herself is a force of pure, reckless joy, animated with a vibrating energy that mirrors her magical nature. Her father Fujimoto is the film's most complex character: a misanthrope who has turned against humanity but cannot quite turn against his own daughter. Sosuke's mother Lisa is one of Ghibli's most impressive maternal figures, competent, adventurous and genuinely fun.
