Ghibli Socks: A Guide to Every Style and Character
Ghibli socks are consistently one of our top three most gifted items at totoro-shop, and it's not hard to understand why. They're affordable, practical, officially licensed, and - unlike most character apparel - genuinely wearable without looking like a costume. The range is wider than most people realise, which is partly why we get so many questions about what the different style names actually mean.
This guide maps the full range and explains the naming system, which can look cryptic from the outside but follows a consistent logic once you understand it.
Understanding the style names
Japanese character sock manufacturers give each design variant within a character family a distinct name. For the Totoro range, here's what each means:
- Tonari - The classic all-over Totoro print. Most recognisable, most popular. The one people picture when they think "Totoro socks".
- Fuwa - Softer, slightly more playful design. The name suggests something light and fluffy.
- Emburo - A more refined, elegant version of the Totoro print. Works with slightly smarter outfits. The name is a phonetic approximation of "embro" (embroidery-adjacent aesthetic).
- Nei - A fresh alternative design that complements the others in a collection.
- Deta - A cute-meets-elegant design that sits between casual and smart-casual.
- Kassa - Totoro in the iconic rainy bus stop scene with his leaf umbrella. Our personal favourite in the range - it's the design that captures the film's most beloved moment.

Totoro socks: six styles
We carry Tonari, Fuwa, Emburo, Nei, Deta and Kassa. All fit EU 38-40 / US 5-8 / UK 4.5-7.5. Polyester and cotton blend, officially licensed. Machine wash cold, don't tumble dry the character print.
Kiki's Delivery Service socks: four styles
Among our most popular non-Totoro socks. We carry: Kiki standard, Kiki Emburo, Kiki Teatime (Jiji in a cosy teatime setting - the warmest of the Kiki designs), and Kiki Rashi. The Rashi is specifically made in Japan in EU 40-43 / US 7-10 - the only larger adult size in our entire Ghibli sock range, which makes it the go-to recommendation when someone asks for men's sizes.
Character and film socks
- Spirited Away: Kaonashi (No-Face) standard and Kuro Kaonashi (darker palette edition)
- Catbus: All-over Catbus print - one of our most immediately eye-catching designs
- Princess Mononoke: Standard and Emburo variants

Sizing summary
All designs except Kiki Rashi fit EU 38-40. The Kiki Rashi fits EU 40-43. If you're buying for someone with larger feet and want official Ghibli socks, the Kiki Rashi is currently the only option in our range.
