Spirited Away: A Deep Dive into Miyazaki's Spirit World

Spirited Away: A Deep Dive into Miyazaki's Spirit World

Winner of the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2003, Spirited Away is the highest-grossing film in Japanese cinema history and the crowning achievement of Hayao Miyazaki's career. Its story of ten-year-old Chihiro, trapped in a supernatural bathhouse after her parents are turned into pigs, is a rich, terrifying and tender coming-of-age journey through a world unlike anything else in animation.

The World of the Spirits

The bathhouse run by the witch Yubaba is inspired by Japanese sento culture, Shinto mythology and Miyazaki's own anxieties about consumerism and environmental destruction. Every figure in the spirit world, from the radish spirit to the enormous baby Boh, reflects a different aspect of Japanese folk belief. The film rewards close attention: details change on every viewing.

Chihiro and the Theme of Work

At its heart, Spirited Away is a story about work, identity and the danger of forgetting who you are. Chihiro's journey from helpless child to capable, determined young woman is one of cinema's most satisfying character arcs. The film's message, that labour and perseverance create identity, resonates with viewers of all ages.

No-Face and the Dangers of Consumption

No-Face (Kaonashi) is the film's most mysterious figure. A being with no identity of his own, he adopts the greed and aggression of those around him. His arc with Chihiro, resolved with radical kindness, is among the film's most moving sequences. No-Face has since become one of Ghibli's most iconic characters, appearing across our Spirited Away collection.
